Windows Mobile 6 to 6.5 Error - Keyboard connected but function keys wont work
Posted by Paul Bowles (Import) on 25 March 2010 05:28 PM
This happens because a lot of new Windows Mobile devices already have some built in support for HID keyboards. When you pair the keyboard up the phone is connecting through its own support. this gives you the basic letter functionality but not the ability to use the shortcut keys. This also stops our driver application from being able to connect to the keyboard.

You will need to follow the steps below to disconnect and then reconnect the keyboard with our driver application.

First please ensure that you have the latest version of the drivers installed for your phone. The best way to install the drivers is to go to www.otadrivers.com from your phones internet browser.

Connecting:
1) Remove the pairing for the keyboard.
2) Do a soft reset (normally done by poking the tip of a stylus into a reset hole) or battery pull on the Pocket PC (to do a battery pull leave the Pocket PC turned on and remove the battery for 20 seconds then put the battery back in.
3) Turn the keyboard on in HID mode and hold down the recessed pairing button for 10 seconds.
4) Pair the keyboard to the Pocket PC again. Once the pairing is completed do not press any other key on the keyboard (this will cause the built in HID support to connect).
5) Run the Freedom Pro Keyboard driver application. Press the connect button on the Pocket PC and then immediately press a key on the keyboard to start the connection.

Once the drivers say connected the keyboard should now be working correctly. Now when you have finished with the keyboard just switch it off. When you want to use it again switch it back on and press a cursor key on the keyboard a couple of times. The Bluetooth light on the keyboard will flash rapidly for a few seconds and then the keyboard will connect to the phone again (and the Bluetooth light will flash slowly).

Trying to pair to an T-Mobile HTC HD2. Love the keyboard but it's a little frustrating to have all of thes hot keys that don't work. tried the above fix and still to no avail. Any advice?

Paul - Freedom Input: Sorry for the frustration. It is a quirk of Windows Mobile 6.5 (and is particularly bad on the HD2). It is just that the HD2 connects to the keyboard using its own HID support before you get chance to get the drivers connected. We have tried various ways of disabling the built in HID support when the drivers are run but this then leads to other issues unfortunately.

The best thing to do is to completely remove the pairing for the keyboard, do a soft reset on the HD2 and then follow the steps above again. The important bit is that once you have the keyboard paired do not touch anything on it until you have run the driver application and connected through there as this will cause the HD2 to connect up with its own HID support.

I have the new iconnect keyboard which has same problems on HTC. Ran this "solution" three times and did not work. Drivers claim bluetooth is off when it is on and gives me option to connect when it is already connected.
Going back life is too short to battle with products that do not do what they say on the tin.

Comment from Freedom: The i-Connex keyboard does not use drivers. That is why this will not work for it. You just need to pair the keyboard up via Bluetooth.
